At what creatinine level do you need dialysis? ›

By comparing the blood and urine level of this substance, the doctor has an accurate idea of how well the kidneys are working. This result is called the creatinine clearance. Usually, when the creatinine clearance falls to 10-12 cc/minute, the patient needs dialysis.

Though kidney transplantation is the ultimate solution to kidney failure, the average life expectancy on peritoneal dialysis is 5-10 months in some cases. However, several patients have succeeded in living a well and improved lifestyle on peritoneal dialysis for about 20 to 30 years.

After a hemodialysis session, creatinine concentration reaches a nadir following equilibration between blood, extravascular and tissue fluid stores.

People with only one kidney may have a normal creatinine level of about 1.8 or 1.9. Creatinine levels of 2.0 or more in infants and 5.0 or more in adults may indicate severe kidney damage. People who are dehydrated may have elevated creatinine levels.

Any high creatinine level shown in a creatinine blood test should be investigated to determine the cause. Many kidney conditions may be treated or effectively managed over time. As previously noted, creatinine levels of 5.0 or greater in an adult typically signify severe kidney failure.

Peritonitis (infection of abdomen) is an occasional complication although should be infrequent with appropriate precautions.

Can you skip a day of peritoneal dialysis? It is important to complete your peritoneal dialysis as precribed. Your kidneys are working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each of your PD exchanges removes waste and excess fluid from your blood.

Normal Results

A normal result is 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL (61.9 to 114.9 µmol/L) for men and 0.6 to 1.1 mg/dL (53 to 97.2 µmol/L) for women. Women often have a lower blood creatinine level than men. This is because women often have less muscle mass than men. Creatinine level varies based on a person's size and muscle mass.

For patients who ask whether dialysis treatment is life long, the answer is that a few may recover from renal function and may stop dialysis, even after a relatively long time on dialysis treatment.

According to the British Medical Journal, the usual reference range for serum creatinine is 60–110 micromoles per liter (mcmol/l), or 0.7–1.2 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl), for males and 45–90 mcmol/l (0.5–1.0 mg/dl) for females. If creatinine is above these levels, doctors may consider it high.

The normal creatinine range for women is 0.6 to 1.2 mg/dL, and 0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for men. You should worry about high creatinine levels if your creatinine measures above these ranges and you present with symptoms like fatigue, nausea and vomiting and swelling.

Normal values are between 2.5 and 8.2 mmol/L. Note that target ranges may vary between laboratories.
